Old bridge
The first Heidelberg bridge was built by Karl Theodor
(1742-1799), which explains it's official name "Karl-Theodor-Brücke".
Altogether, the bridge was rebuilt 9 times; more than likely victim of
flooding. In 1788,
it was finally rebuilt completely in stone and supported by 8 posts. The double-armed
bridge gate comes from the late middle ages. The towers served the bridge keeper not only
as an apartment, but also as a dungeon for prisoners. In 1945 both rooms above the gateway
were refurbished as artistic apartments. Big

Numerous statues adorn the north and south sides of the bridge. For example, in the south
is a standing portrait of the baroque baron surrounded by the river gods of the Rhine,
Donau, Neckar and Mosel rivers. In the north, Karl Theodor is brought in connection with
Paellas Athenae. The 3 female figures at the foot of the bridge personify piety, justice,
agriculture and trade. Another statue, the "Brückenaff" (or bridge ape) is the
favorite animal of the Heidelberger.

"Gasthaus Stahl is a real gem of a place, in that
wonderful, scenic location up in the hills above the Rhine, in classic tiny Dellhofen
village, yet only minutes away from the walled cities of Oberwesel and Bacharach, right on
the river.
There are enough castles and other places of interest within 30-90 minutes of
pleasant driving to keep tourists busy for a long time, but the serenity of the inn itself
is the best feature.
The rooms are so classic, yet they have all the modern touches we need. The
furnishings and atmosphere of the inn are from times we thought had gone past, and it was
great to just soak in the gemutlichkeit! ... "

The old brick arch wine cellar
of the Winery Stahl, in which the wines are stored; the wine grapes
are self-grown and the wines are self-made. Wine tasting for groups up to 30 people in the
brick arch wine cellar. You'll become a romantic feeling with the lights off and set aglow
in candlelight. "The wine tasting at Weingut
Stahl is truly educational, with more varieties of flavorful German wines than most
Americans ever realize exist. I think that is worth the trip in itself."

Heiliggeistkirche (Holy Ghost Church)
The gothic Church was erected in the 15th century. It served varied
purposes: House of God, burial place to princes, university banquet hall and safekeeping
place for the Bibliotheca Palatina. The books were kept in planned galleries, which
explains the wide aisles and relatively narrow form of the nave.
In the 30 year war, the church was booty from Tilly and was a gift to the Pope in
1623. In the late Middle Ages Heidelbberg was pulled under the spell of religious
differences and as a result the church was separated by a dividing wall (until 1936) into
two halves; one catholic and the other evangelistic. Big picture

Main Street
The main street stretches over 1,6 km from Bismarckplatz to the city hall,
and is therefore the longest pedestrian zone of Europe. From 1392 until the first city
expansion, this street, at that time considered the upper street connecting with the lower
street, showed the doubled east-west-axis of the city. The shopping mile offers Baroque
and Renaissance facades, department stores, boutiques, pretzel stands, street vendors,
beggars, artists and beautiful street cafes.

Heidelberger Castle
For five-hundred years in the Heidelberger Schloss resided the
***Pfalzish*** electors of the family Wittelsbacher: Ruprecht I in 1386 founded the
University of Heidelberg. Ruprecht II was elected king in 1400. Ottoheinrich introduced
the Reformation which caused a dispute over the centuries. This dispute climaxed under
Friedreich V, the misfortunate 'Winterkönig' or winter king.
In the 30-Year War, the city and palace were for the first time destroyed.
Friedreich's son, Karl-Ludwig, rebuilt both.

After a further attack of French troops, the palace fell again in rubble and
ashes. The elector, Karl-Theodor, who resided in Schwetzingen, and to whom the Heidelbergers owe
thanks for the 'Alte Brücke' (old bridge) and the 'Karlstor' (Karl's
gateway), tried in
vain to make the palace once again inhabitable. Big picture
In the end, the French baron, Charles de Graimberg, saved the palace
ruins from total destruction. He asserted the old walls no longer served as a quarry. The
Heidelberger Palace became the symbol for the Romantic era. The Kings courtroom, in spite
of it's gothic interior, dates from the year 1934. |
